Left: Receiving E-Challenge Award 2016. Right: Receiving EotY 2018.

Two years ago, we pitched Nanome’s vision to democratize science, technology, engineering and mathematics through Virtual Reality and won the 2016 Entrepreneur Challenge (“E-Challenge”) at UC San Diego. This propelled us into the launch of our first two products, Nano-one and Calcflow onto the major VR stores, Steam, Viveport, and Oculus. Since 2016, we’ve made substantial progress in consumer and academic user adoption. Most remarkably, however, is our rate of enterprise-level adoption; today, Nanome software is used by numerous “big” pharmaceutical companies for drug development. Nanome’s reach now connects dedicated students and the pool of top researchers and engineers they will someday join. This would not be the case had we no worked intimately with the startup community in San Diego to support like-minded entrepreneurs in launching their products and changing the world.

I congratulate all the teams that made it to the finals of this year’s E-Challenge, with emphasis on the finalists in the Life Tech track: Navega Therapeutics and CReATE Medical. Both products will improve lives around the world. I anticipate future Nanome collaborations on both CReATE’s 3D data capture platform for heart monitoring and Navega Therapeutics gene therapy solutions for chronic pain relief. Today, Nanome engineers are building a CRISPR module for expressing custom engineered proteins. We’ll keep the gene hackers updated.

This year, Nanome was greatly honored to be recognized as a top startup in the San Diego community. Likewise, I couldn’t have been more stoked to judge the 2018 E-Challenge and discover ‘the next Nanome’. It was a great surprise to hear my name announced for 2018 Entrepreneur of the Year Award recipient. I am deeply grateful to contribute to the burgeoning San Diego startup community. Additionally, endless thanks is owed to Nanome’s global community of team members, users and enthusiasts. As we continue our mission to democratize science, I look forward to us thriving together.

Sincerely,
Steve McCloskey
